PRESS RELEASE
Ascension Republican Party Opposes “Quick Take” Expropriation Bill
The Ascension Republican Parish Executive Committee has gone on record in opposition to Senate Bill 703. The bill was authored by Republican Senator Jody Amedee and has co-sponsors of three additional House Republicans all from Ascension Parish: Representatives Johnny Berthelot, Eddie Lambert and Clay Schexnayder.
Under the State Constitution, every parish in Louisiana has expropriation powers of eminent domain. Senate Bill 703 would grant additional authority for local Ascension Parish government to quickly expropriate property from private citizens without current due process protections. No parish in Louisiana has “quick take expropriation” powers.
At their regularly scheduled meeting of May 8, 2012, the Ascension Republican Parish Executive Committee (ARPEC) voted to unanimously oppose the bill. Eleven of thirteen members were present.
Private property is one of the fundamental rights we have in America and part of the Republican Party Platform. These individual liberties should be protected and promoted by all Republicans.
The bill will be discussed on May 29th at 10:00 a.m. at the State Capitol in the House Civil Law and Procedures Committee. Citizens are free to attend this meeting and express their support or opposition of Senate Bill 703. The House committee will meet in room 4.
